In the year 1997 while attending a massive Fourth of July festival event at the Patriot Park in Pigeon Forge, TN, I was there and set up as one of over 400 craft vendors to sell and display my cool canjoe musical creations. I was also scheduled to perform as the opening for the music show that was to be a part of that day’s celebration event. As nature and providence often dictate as cause for change in plans, though, that day had some real surprises. The super country music band, “Shenandoah”, was the main headliner for the event and as their crew were setting up the main stage for their performance, I was manning my booth out in the field. The crowds of people attending were in the tens of thousands and no one there having yet ever before seen or even heard of the canjoe instruments, were enthusiastically coming by in droves to hear me do my pitch and listen to me play my own one-stringed musical thing. The sales of my instruments were brisk and though my little tent was very modest in comparison to the “big boy” vendors all around, there seemed much bigger groups gathered around me than of the others selling their goods. As the clear, bright, sunny morning progressed, a few clouds began to appear in the East Tennessee mountain sky and though the weather was supposed to remain good, a few scattered thunderstorms were in the area. Nearing the eleven o’clock morning hour, a tall and widely smiling man approached me from my right and quickly walked up to me at my booth. Before I could say anything, he enthusiastically inquired, “hey, can I draw you?”. I looked at him with a little puzzlement and said, “right now?”. He then quickly replied, “no, I’ll just remember what you look like and draw you later”. I, of course, agreed and he and I talked a little more and then exchanged business cards. Turned out that this man, Tim Elsaesser, was and is a professional artist and a cartoonist who lived in Gatlinburg and is now the present owner of a graphic art business called, “Spur of the Moment Concepts”, with his web site found at magicofthesmokies.com. He is also known as the “cartoonist of the stars” and has drawn caricatures of many famous individuals in his experience. After our first meeting, Tim did draw me and he sent the really cool caricature that he drew to me in the mail. That cartoon drawing that he sent was so bad-to-the-bone cool, I instantly adopted it as the official logo of the CanJoe Company, and it has since been a trademark image of my business and used on all of the company correspondence as well as all printed promotional and publicity items, for all these years. It is seen prominently at the head of every page on my web site, is on the cover on all the music tab booklets that go with the instruments, and is even printed on the special limited edition personal cans that were made by the Print On Can, Inc., for me.
Now, that happenstance encounter with Tim Elsaesser was a really fortunate meeting but what soon occurred later that day in the park was just as memorable. A couple of hours before the show was to begin, the official City of Pigeon Forge event promoter and family friend, Bob Easton, drove hastily through the vendor area telling everyone to take cover. He warned that the weather bureau had just sent notice that a powerful straight line wind was imminently heading directly toward the event and though it would be brief, it could cause severe damage and/or personal injury. Sure enough, within a brief few minutes an extremely powerful wind along with hail and pounding rain hit the area like a tornado. Tents, merchandise, and debris were flying around like Dorothy’s house in the “Wizard of Oz”! There was bedlam and panic all around as I quickly laid my own body over the table filled with my instruments under my tent and a female friend who was helping me that day, courageously grabbed hold of one of the tent poles and held it down with her own dear life effort. After the storm then quickly passed through, as fast as it appeared, it was gone. An eerie quiet prevailed in the air and upon looking around, there was not one vendor tent left standing, except mine! Out of the over 400 tents that had just a few minutes before been covering and occupying the huge parade field, they were suddenly ALL gone; strewed around with poles sticking up and scattered everywhere. Then, while looking toward the place where the main stage had stood, it was now collapsed. The main stage roof had caved in and all of the group Shenandoah’s equipment was destroyed. The event was obviously abruptly over! Nothing left to do but to help others gather their stuff and for us all to pack up and go home. Luckily, there were only a few minor injuries and one reported heart attack but the place was a total wreck and the day was finished. Well, what a mixed bag of experiences that day yielded. I didn’t get to perform, didn’t get to sell all my goods, but DID meet a lot of cool folks and DID get the coolest drawing I’ve used now for the past 15 years as my own, personal company logo. Tim became a real friend and a staunch supporter of the CanJoe Company and I now have some vivid memories and a wild but true story to tell… and if you’re reading this, I’ve just now shared it with you! ~ CanJoe*John (10/26/12)
