Unicorns, Roses, Pink and Purple

A few weeks before Christmas 2018, a teacher from the state of Colorado contacted CanJoe*John via a phone call to inquire about how to order an instrument for her granddaughter. After a brief explanation describing that each instrument created at the Blountville, TN based shop of “The CanJoe Company”, est 1994, is always custom made to suit the desires and to match the tastes and personality of those who will own it, the lady explained that her 9 year old granddaughter was interested in learning how to play a stringed musical instrument, loves the colors pink and purple, loves unicorns, and likes things that are simple. Well, the “learn to play music on a stringed instrument” part is easy as each instrument always includes a detailed book of tab music offering simple, well known tunes to learn from. The rest of the order inquiry, though, was met with the caller allowing the master maker, CanJoe*John, to offer suggestions and options that helped guide the decisions for the creation’s direction. The kind grandmother, Nancy, decided that with the many years experience in his creating them that CanJoe*John’s own discretion would suffice, so she sent him her order, right away, and waited.

Now, CanJoe*John has a whole lot of experience with children and what they like. One of his best little friends is a delightful 7 year old young lady who is quite close. She and her mother lived in his house for well over a year as they were transitioning to have a place of their own, so little Skylar and he are like blood relatives; she calls him her “Can-pa”, and she is often consulted in offering her opinions when designs for her age group matter. Besides her, CanJoe*John is also a professional children’s entertainer (kids of all ages), and having toured children’s hospitals on the Tour of Smiles for many years has taught him much about what kids like, too.

So, CanJoe*John chose a beautiful piece of Eastern mountain spruce wood to fabricate the neck/finger board from. He then went to the local hobby store to find unicorns, and things pink and purple that a 9 year old little girl would like. As the commissioned creation was coming together, CanJoe*John brought little Skylar into his shop as an expert consultant to help him decide on which purple can, as he had picked out several, that she thought would best represent the taste of the new-to-be owner. Skylar quickly chose a beautiful grape “Crush” can and, that is exactly what he had already thought to choose, too…. So, that is specifically the can used.

Building any of his instruments, choosing design details, matching owner personalities in the finished instruments, and creating true, fine art in these instruments takes much thought, imagination, a very good eye for art, lots of skill, and unparalleled experience that only CanJoe*John has achieved at the highest degree due his nearly 3 decades in business of hand crafting his instruments. Every detail matters. His signature does not go on one, nor the product shipped unless each one meets the highest standards attainable.
