Craftsmanship

You don’t have to preach honesty to men with creative purpose. Let a human being throw energies of his soul into the making of something, and the instinct of workmanship will take care of his honesty… A genuine craftsman will not adulterate his product. The reason isn’t because duty says he shouldn’t, but because passion says he couldn’t.” ~ Walter Lippman

Prior to CanJoe*John establishing the licensed business, The CanJoe Company of Blountville, TN in the year 1994, no other similar enterprise in the business world, anywhere on Earth, existed or operated with sole purpose of designing, creating, manufacturing, marketing, and doing public trade in the distribution and sales of these cool one-stringed musical instruments, except for that of the instrument’s genuine design originator, Herschel R. Brown. Herschel, though, who officially made his living in full time business as a licensed building contractor in eastern NC, initially offered his one-stringed musical creations as kits to a world wide public market through a wood working supply catalog company headquartered in the state of California, but was not, then, nor ever operating any business specifically created for, licensed as, or recognized for exclusive purpose in producing and/or publicly selling these items. When CanJoe*John decided to go into the full time business as sole proprietor of The CanJoe Company that first year, he had already been directly and intimately involved in business with Herschel for over a couple of years, prior. The idea for CanJoe*John to license and establish as a separate legal business entity was readily recognized by Herschel as a mutually co-benefitting business maneuver, and Herschel quickly put his full support and blessings behind the plan. He personally provided a line of financial credit, directly supplied materials, and then he also personally created jigs and provided design patterns, blueprints, and regular open consultation between himself and John toward the establishing of the world’s first official company dedicated for their supply.

Now, many know that Herschel Brown as a building contractor used the scrap pine wood materials he recovered from his construction sites to manufacture his kits, and finished instruments from. He would take the suitable sized recovered materials to his shop, rip them into specific dimensions, shape them, accurately fret them, and then assemble them into his, then, newly introduced musical products to the market. When the CanJoe Company first began, Hershel’s kits were the basis as sources provided for being assembled into finished instruments. Hershel used, exclusively, pine wood for these kits, so too, all CanJoe Company finished products were identical in material and basic design. For the first several years in operation, the CanJoe Company purchased supplies directly from Herschel, modified the rough materials received into refined, much improved finished products, and as means to reach large markets, publically and regularly attended, displayed, demonstrated, and sold them as a licensed vendor attending well attended major music festivals, arts and crafts festivals, and where ever opportunity allowed.

As a youth, CanJoe*John grew up in the presence of master craftsmen who sold their exquisitely hand crafted products as elite members of the Southern Highlands Arts and Craft Guild via the Blue Ridge Parkway Craft Center located in Blowing Rock, NC. His grandmother, Louise VanArsdall, was the live in manager of the center for 27 years. As he frequently visited and stayed with her over the years, he grew up admiring the master crafted works of these Southern Appalachian mountain craftspeople. From the conceptual origin of the CanJoe Company, John fully intended to hone the art of crafting these cool instruments into the highest level of quality attainable; to make them as true works of musical art, rather than as novelty toys, or gag gift products. Having been in continuous, licensed operation now for the past 25 years with thousands of his hand crafted items sold world wide, the goal and concept has never been abandoned. Nearly every instrument created by the CanJoe Company for over two decades in business have been designed, and hand created as custom works of art exclusive to the desires of their owners.

A couple of weeks before Christmas 2018, a phone call from the Raleigh, NC area was received by CanJoe*John with the caller to inquire about having a CanJoe Company instrument to be made for his brother, a professional musician who happens to also be a very accomplished wood worker. After the usual back-and-forth discovery inquiries to help determine the best materials, design, and particularly, the can that best reflects the taste and personality of the intended receiver of this special instrument, it was determined that the intended recipient’s favorite drink would be diet Mountain Dew. That information helped the rest of the maker’s suggestions and the buyer’s decisions. Wood workers are often highly aware of the beauty, difficulty or ease of workability of specific woods, and the desirability as well as value of certain exotic wood materials available. The buyer, also a wood worker, loved the suggestion of using fine mahogany for the instrument’s neck, so chose that material for the product. CanJoe*John, though, also quite often upgrades orders “just because”. In this case, and as an added surprise for the receiver, CanJoe*John added much more to make this instrument supper special. Having acquired some stock of exquisite curly maple wood (indirectly cast off from the Gibson guitar company), a super beautiful, very curly patterned piece of the maple was ripped down and attached as the finger board to the mahogany neck to create a fabulous finished work of art.
