The “Wolf-Jo”

In early 2018, CanJoe*John, the founder and proprietor of the original CanJoe Company, est. 1994, of Blountville, TN was contacted from a man named Rob, who raises wolves. Now, this individual is not just the “guy next door” who chooses to raise these wild creatures known as Lupus Canis for the purpose of being pets, he is an expert wildlife biologist for the state of North Carolina. He raises them for intent to help educate the public about these wonderful animals and takes them into public venues to show folks how wolves coexist. In deciding how he wanted his hand crafted, uniquely custom designed, one-of-a-kind, one-stringed musical instrument to be, he decided to drive from his home in western NC to visit CanJoe*John’s Blountville, TN workshop. There, Rob would personally hand select the materials from which his instrument would be fashioned, including all desired details, as well as the instrument’s resonator, the can.

Rob decided that the can needed to be very unique. He did not want a soda can, or an adult beverage can representing his personal tastes. He discovered that on a shelf in CanJoe*John’s shop are hundreds of highly unusual, rare cans to choose from, but most impressive to Rob are the highly limited edition cans depicting the official logos of CanJoe*John, sporting the world recognized caricature logo on the can’s label, as seen below:

“One string, One Can, One Man”

After much consideration by Rob of how he wanted his finished instrument to be, he requested an authentically accurate depiction of a wolf print be burned into the instrument’s finger board. He then chose to have a beautiful silver Celtic Christian cross to be inlaid into the instrument’s head stock representing his Irish heritage and his dedicated life long devotion to his Christian faith.

Every detail of the craftsmanship as well as the requests of additional adornments to be included in any instrument always masterfully crafted by CanJoe*John are, also, always painstakingly created. The wolf paw depicted on and permanently burned into this particular creation required much research of the finer details that separate the wolf paw from that of the domesticated dogs. Rob’s expertise with wolves would easily allow him to detect whether or not the details of the paw print were accurate. Many attempts during the process to render the paw print on to the spot chosen on the finger board were drawn and erased over and over until the paw image satisfied CanJoe*John that the work was accurate. Then, a super careful, slow and steady hand was required to complete the paw print by burning it into the wood without causing irreparable damage to the, then, nearly finished instrument. After getting the paw print done, the final finish of the instrument included adding the inlaid cross, and then CanJoe*John’s own choice for upgrading the order, as a gift, by imbedding four small diamonds into the instrument. The diamonds included one imbedded next to the inlaid cross representing God, the “Father”, the cross inlaid representing Christ, the “Son”, and a crystal star added to the slant of the head stock to represent the “Holy Spirit”. The other three diamonds imbedded along the side of the finger board just below the 3rd, 7th, and 10th frets were added as markers to denote the primary key notes of the diatonic scale. Below are some images of the completed instrument before it was shipped out:

About CanJoe*John

CanJoe*John began making and marketing the authentic 'canjoe' instruments from their origin. Introduced to them by their creator, Herschel R. Brown, in the early 1990s, John, from the beginning, helped Herschel manufacture them in Herschel's shop. John relocated back to his home state of TN in 1993 and continued, initially with Herschel's direct assistance, to make and market them, establishing the licensed sole proprietorship, the CanJoe Company, in 1994. As a professional musician CanJoe*John became billed as the "world's most unique musician, playing the world's most unique musical instrument, the canjoe" (aka, canjo). Always with his own personal canjoe instrument in hand he was awarded the adult "2007 Male Bluegrass Instrumentalist of the Year" by the North American Country Music Association International (NACMAI), and now having the distinction of being the first and only canjoe picker to ever perform on the Grand Ole Opry, has literally taken the one-stringed thing to the outer limits!
