The Diddly-Jo

In the spring of 2018 CanJoe*John received a phone call one day from a young man, named Kyle, who had recently purchased a one-stringed “diddly bow” from a popular internet based on line supplier/store that makes and sells cigar box stringed instruments, one-stringed “canjo” instruments, and other related items of which Kyle found by an internet search. Upon receiving his mail ordered cigar box diddly bow instrument from the on line business, he was immediately most disappointed. Kyle is left handed and had requested the one he ordered to be made for a left handed picker. When he got it, the cigar box was cracked and the label on it, when played left handed, displayed upside down. Further, the finger board of that instrument was crudely made from rough, unfinished, inexpensive, common stock wood, so Kyle called the business to inquire about getting an exchange for one like he had expected. Upon contacting the proprietor of that business, Kyle was informed that what he got was what he paid for, and no exchange or refund was considered. That phone call from Kyle to CanJoe*John, that day, was to inquire about ordering another one, but one of extreme level high quality, and to be as master crafted to suit his personal tastes and desires. Kyle made arrangements to travel over to the Blountville, TN based shop of the CanJoe Company and he brought along with him a beautiful black with red and gold lettered “Punch” cigar box that he had chosen to be used for his instrument. So, after lots of discussion about the details, desires and expectations were exchanged, a deal was struck to commission CanJoe*John to create a super fine, one-of-kind in the world, hand crafted and extremely detailed, one-stringed diddly bow instrument with all the bells and whistles imaginably possible. Kyle wanted only “the very best diddly bow ever made”, to date.

Below is a photograph of Kyle holding and showing off his newly finished instrument. The setting where the following photos were made was where he was as a special guest on the very popular “Mountain Matinee” radio program, aired LIVE from the NE Tennessee’s FM 96.3, “The Possum studio. He was there to talk about his newly made instrument:

The following photographs of Kyle’s custom designed and hand crafted “diddly bow”, dubbed the “Diddly-Jo“, due it being fretted with the diatonic musical scale pattern and played more like a guitar, or banjo type instrument, has both a custom hand wound magnetic pickup, and a piezoelectric pickup inside of the box. It uses a three way switch to make it function by either pickup, separately, or as combined. The pickups are controlled by both tone and volume pots, with the control knobs for each shown at the inside end of the box. The electronic systems built for this instrument were custom created by Jack Bradshaw, a specialist team member of the CanJoe Company.

The instrument’s neck is of very exotic wormy chestnut with a super fine, antique wormy cherry wood finger board laminated together. The finger board has visual fret markers added on its surface at the key notes, shown as being black or red stained in colors, and has two different mother-of-pearl dove images inlaid in to the finger board, one at the instrument’s 3rd fret, and the other at the 10th fret positions. Along the edge of the finger board are additional fret markers of imbedded, small diamonds placed at the 3rd, the 7th, and the 10th fret positions, as well. Inlaid into the instrument’s head stock are a Christian cross of carved turquoise stone, with another emblem of turquoise stone just above the cross representing the stone of Christ’s tomb, as rolled away. Beside of it is another small diamond representing the spirit of Christ reflected by its colorful scintillating facets. Also inlaid in the instrument’s head stock is imbedded a very special multi-faceted cut crystal ball, seen adjacent to and reflected by the silver tuner key head. It represents the Earth and sparkles with the colors of the rainbow as representing God’s many people. The instrument’s fine ebony wood bridge is inlaid with a braid of beautiful abalone and the slant cut of the instrument’s head stock is imbedded with the CanJoe Company trademark cut crystal five point star. The “Punch” cigar box is tweaked out, trimmed with beautiful brass corner brackets to finish the whole thing as being a truly gorgeous work of musical art. There is no instrument made anywhere else in the world like it.
