The CanJoe Company of Blountville, TN is the pioneer of making and marketing the one-stringed musical instruments called “canjo”, or, more accurately, the CanJoe. Having introduced these cool musical instruments to the world market nearly two decades ago, every single hand crafted instrument ever made, given away, or sold has been warranted for life. The policy of the CanJoe Company has always been that if anything ever happens to an authentic, signed & dated, CanJoe Company instrument (except a broken string), it will be repaired, restored, or replaced forever… period! The photo of the can shown above is of one that the owner attempted to put on himself after he damaged the one that originally was attached. The photo does not show the details very well, in that the lid was obviously cut out with a pocket knife and the rim cut away to mount it. It was mounted with just one screw and the hole cut in the can for the string was the size of a dime with a very jagged edge. The whole can he put on was not only very dangerous (it was all razor sharp edges), it was not very effectively functional as a resonator, either. There is a specific tool and very practiced technique to properly remove the lid of a beverage can which is only part of the preparation required to properly mount the can on the finger board, and with many thousands done by the CanJoe Company over the past two decades, even with great experience there still exists screw ups. Besides the bad can, the original tuner key was barely hanging on as the screw that holds the cog in place was missing, and the string that had been put on was way too heavy a gauge and was “cheese wiring” through the can, and as well, the tail piece holding the string had been jammed into and below the wood surface. The owner’s mother called a few days before mailing the broken instrument back for repairs and she related that the owner, her adult son, loves baseball and prefers, among the few options, “Mountain Dew”. After receiving the badly damaged instrument, the repairs began. The can was removed, the tuner key removed and a new screw replaced in the cog wheel, all the hardware removed and then the old worn finish was restored. After the finish was done, some minor upgrade modifications to the finger board design were made and the hardware replaced. With the parts all back together, a new can was selected from the CanJoe Company archives; this one used has a baseball theme and is of a collector series Mountain Dew can. Now totally restored, this instrument will promptly be packed and shipped back to the owner and the only charge is for the cost of shipping. So, if anybody, anywhere, ever receives or owns a CanJoe Company product, remember, they are warranted for life! Just pack up the broken one, send it back and it will be returned good as new. Y’all have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!
