Many who call to inquire about ordering their own instruments have specific desires as to what cans will go on their instruments. The CanJoe Company specializes in providing only custom created musical works of art and ALL CanJoe Company instruments are individually hand crafted to suit the owners. Recently, a man from the “Tar Heel” state of NC called wanting to order one instrument for his wife, and one for himself. In the usual exchange of information required to determine the exact specifications and details for these builds, it was discovered that the wife required a “Stroh’s” can on hers, and because he grew up in western NC, he wanted his with a “SunDrop” can. Once the cans were determined, then the wood types that would best go with the cans were discussed and his choice for both was to use fine hard woods. As an artist and a ‘cannoisseur’ of fine woods, he left the choice up to me. In the design process, all things about the owners of each instrument are taken into ‘cansideration’. Oak is a manly type of wood so I chose a fine piece of #1 grade, blemish free, white oak to build his “SunDrop” canjoe instrument. The characteristics of the naturally light toned oak wood also blends nicely with the “SunDrop” colors. I made his a little heavier than hers as his hands would fit a little better on the slightly bigger piece. In designing the stain patterns and choosing the stain colors, it’s all from my personal artistic perspective, so I chose the matching colors of the can, green and red, to stain this particular finger board, and then over-stained the wood neck with golden oak wood stain to blend with the yellow colors in the can design.
For her instrument, she requested the “Stroh’s” can. Unbeknown to me, this brand of beer is not available in my neck of the woods. I called several chain food stores and even the large distributor of beer in the area and none had any available. Not giving in to defeat, I then went through my large inventory of rare and highly collectible beer cans from the 1960s era and found a vintage version in my collection. Ordinarily the vintage cans often cost more according to their collector’s value but this one is not particularly more valuable and I called the husband to verify its approval. He then told me that the real reason she chose the brand is that her father worked for the Stroh’s company back in the 60s so that it would work just fine. In choosing the wood for her’s, a fine piece of curly maple was decided. It being a very light color would be nicely suited to the can and the three colors, red, gold, and black that are the same colors as parts of the can logo were then chosen to decorate the fingerboard. Now that these two beautiful instruments are finished and shipped, it always gives me great pleasure to ‘canplete’ another order and to know that two more happy canjoe pickers will exist in this big, wide world!
