The OFFICIAL CanJoe Company LOGO

Caricature of CanJoe*John

Official Trademark Logo of the CanJoe Company

In the year 1997 while attending a massive Fourth of July festival event at the Patriot Park in Pigeon Forge, TN, I was there and set up as one of over 400 craft vendors to sell and display my cool canjoe musical creations. I was also scheduled to perform as the opening for the music show that was to be a part of that day’s celebration event. As nature and providence often dictate as cause for change in plans, though, that day had some real surprises. The super country music band, “Shenandoah”, was the main headliner for the event and as their crew were setting up the main stage for their performance, I was manning my booth out in the field. The crowds of people attending were in the tens of thousands and no one there having yet ever before seen or even heard of the canjoe instruments, were enthusiastically coming by in droves to hear me do my pitch and listen to me play my own one-stringed musical thing. The sales of my instruments were brisk and though my little tent was very modest in comparison to the “big boy” vendors all around, there seemed much bigger groups gathered around me than of the others selling their goods. As the clear, bright, sunny morning progressed, a few clouds began to appear in the East Tennessee mountain sky and though the weather was supposed to remain good, a few scattered thunderstorms were in the area. Nearing the eleven o’clock morning hour, a tall and widely smiling man approached me from my right and quickly walked up to me at my booth. Before I could say anything, he enthusiastically inquired, “hey, can I draw you?”. I looked at him with a little puzzlement and said, “right now?”. He then quickly replied, “no, I’ll just remember what you look like and draw you later”. I, of course, agreed and he and I talked a little more and then exchanged business cards. Turned out that this man, Tim Elsaesser, was and is a professional artist and a cartoonist who lived in Gatlinburg and is now the present owner of a graphic art business called, “Spur of the Moment Concepts”, with his web site found at magicofthesmokies.com. He is also known as the “cartoonist of the stars” and has drawn caricatures of many famous individuals in his experience. After our first meeting, Tim did draw me and he sent the really cool caricature that he drew to me in the mail. That cartoon drawing that he sent was so bad-to-the-bone cool, I instantly adopted it as the official logo of the CanJoe Company, and it has since been a trademark image of my business and used on all of the company correspondence as well as all printed promotional and publicity items, for all these years. It is seen prominently at the head of every page on my web site, is on the cover on all the music tab booklets that go with the instruments, and is even printed on the special limited edition personal cans that were made by the Print On Can, Inc., for me.
Now, that happenstance encounter with Tim Elsaesser was a really fortunate meeting but what soon occurred later that day in the park was just as memorable. A couple of hours before the show was to begin, the official City of Pigeon Forge event promoter and family friend, Bob Easton, drove hastily through the vendor area telling everyone to take cover. He warned that the weather bureau had just sent notice that a powerful straight line wind was imminently heading directly toward the event and though it would be brief, it could cause severe damage and/or personal injury. Sure enough, within a brief few minutes an extremely powerful wind along with hail and pounding rain hit the area like a tornado. Tents, merchandise, and debris were flying around like Dorothy’s house in the “Wizard of Oz”! There was bedlam and panic all around as I quickly laid my own body over the table filled with my instruments under my tent and a female friend who was helping me that day, courageously grabbed hold of one of the tent poles and held it down with her own dear life effort. After the storm then quickly passed through, as fast as it appeared, it was gone. An eerie quiet prevailed in the air and upon looking around, there was not one vendor tent left standing, except mine! Out of the over 400 tents that had just a few minutes before been covering and occupying the huge parade field, they were suddenly ALL gone; strewed around with poles sticking up and scattered everywhere. Then, while looking toward the place where the main stage had stood, it was now collapsed. The main stage roof had caved in and all of the group Shenandoah’s equipment was destroyed. The event was obviously abruptly over! Nothing left to do but to help others gather their stuff and for us all to pack up and go home. Luckily, there were only a few minor injuries and one reported heart attack but the place was a total wreck and the day was finished. Well, what a mixed bag of experiences that day yielded. I didn’t get to perform, didn’t get to sell all my goods, but DID meet a lot of cool folks and DID get the coolest drawing I’ve used now for the past 15 years as my own, personal company logo. Tim became a real friend and a staunch supporter of the CanJoe Company and I now have some vivid memories and a wild but true story to tell… and if you’re reading this, I’ve just now shared it with you! ~ CanJoe*John (10/26/12)

Rare Cans

My can

"One string, One Can, One Man"

When those who are looking for extremely unique and very personalized CanJoe Company instruments, the first thing that must be considered when ordering is the choice of the can; the resonator, the “voice” of the instrument. There are obviously thousands of options to choose from and the best cans that provide the best sound, or tone, are from the modern aluminum beverage cans. Most any size aluminum can will work in making a nice instrument but the more common 12 ounce version is the most prolific source available and usually makes the best option for quality of sound and function. Choosing the can, though, is a matter of taste. It should reflect something very personal, very specific about the person who will own the instrument. Some people will choose a can, or brand, that is their favorite drink, or one that is a regional favorite, or ones like, such as, the “Bubba” cola can, for instance, that reflects their nick name, etc. In the CanJoe Company shop are stored many hundreds of unique cans; some very rare ones, and some that are highly collectible and/or are vintage cans. Some of the cans, too, are very valuable with price tags that can be surprisingly much higher than the common, over-the-counter ones. For example, some beer can or soda can collectors will pay dearly for rare cans that they would like to add to their collections. There are individual collectors that specialize in just beer cans, others that choose soda beverage cans, and even some who want vintage oil or gas cans. The more rare, the higher the value and also the price tags these collectors are willing to pay. One specific can that is no where else available in the world are the personalized “CanJoe*John” cans. Made specially by the Print On Can, Inc., a business that has now been closed for many years, these special cans sport the CanJoe Company slogan, “One String, One Can, One Man”, in reference to the first album ever produced in music history, “One String, One Can, One Man, and One Band”, featuring the one-stringed canjo musical instrument as the lead instrument and as performed by CanJoe*John on that CD’s debuted release as registered through BMI, from the year 2000. These cans were produced and printed by Print On Can, Inc in the year 2001, supplying a total of 20 cases. These now very limited edition cans were factory filled with water and show a cowboy image with a lasso to depict the “One String”; an image of a can with the logo of Print On Can, Inc to depict the “One Can”; and the trademark caricature of CanJoe*John to depict the “One Man”. Only a little less than one and a half cases remain available and are used only by special request and on the premium or on the higher levels of crafted instruments made. The photos shown below are of a fine, custom electric instrument made for a 28 year old musician named, Phil, and was ordered by his mother as a birthday gift.

“One String, One Can, One Man” … ONE BIG MISSION!

Here’s a link to an excellent story written by Brian Long, staff writer of the Knoxville News Sentinel, of Knoxville, TN and published in 2009 in that paper. This superbly written story tells many details about the true history of the canjoe (canjo) musical instrument. It also relates, in detail, about how the canjoe instrument is used at it’s highest and best.

Martinsville 1

"Sam Bass" /Martinsville Speedway

The CanJoe Company of Blountville, TN is the ONLY source for the authentic, original one-stringed musical works of art that are also the ONLY genuinely world-wide recognized and highly sought after “real deal” one-stringed musical instruments made from “a stick, a string, and a can”. They are, too, ONLY available as custom ordered works of art. The details of craftsmanship in every instrument made are absolutely unequaled, unparalleled, unprecedented in quality and design and there is nowhere, and nobody, *period*, in this universe with more experience in designing, creating, or producing these instruments than CanJoe*John. The CanJoe Company pioneered and introduced these products to the market in the early 1990’s with the personal approval of and direct assistance of the instrument’s creator, Hershel R. Brown. Officially establishing the licensed CanJoe Company in December of 1994, CanJoe*John has remained in continued business since and any other similar item now showing up in the market place should not be confused with any of the authentic CanJoe Company products, nor even compared.
So, how does anyone order or receive a truly authentic, one-of-a-kind CanJoe Company instrument? There is ONLY one way! Order by phone, calling and talking personally to the maker, the craftsman, the real artist, CanJoe*John! Why is a phone call necessary? …Because there are many details about the individual who will own one of these instruments that must be determined before the instrument is priced, commissioned and created. All considerations about any potential new owner are involved in the design & creation of each new instrument, using such personal history and information as, age, gender, personality, drink preferences, color preferences, region from which that person grew up or lives, and/or many other details that would contribute to the making of each instrument as extremely personal to the specific person who will then proudly own and play their specially custom designed and beautifully, perfectly crafted instrument.
The “Martinsville & Mahogany” canjo instrument shown in the photos with this post are just more examples of what kind of particulars actually go into and dictate the choosing process as well as determine the finishing details of these unique works of art. The new owner of the “Martinsville & Mahogany” instrument shown, recently retired from work and the purchaser wanted for her instrument gift to reflect details specific of this individual’s personal interests, good taste, and high standards. In the discovery process it was determined that the soon-to-be and now proud owner of this instrument loves NASCAR, is from the Carolina area, drinks “Mountain Dew”, and had been observed picking up and inspecting a similar one-stringed instrument elsewhere, fascinated by the concept. This information allowed the choices of the “Mountain Dew” commemorative can with the Martinsville Motor Speedway, NASCAR logos, and extremely cool, beautiful graphics to fit the bill. The purchaser also wanted the premium hardwood model and her decision for the fine Honduran mahogany was made. The “art” process is then totally determined by the artist and all the finer details are intimately incorporated in the finished product which makes these hand crafted, uniquely designed, custom works of art as can be found absolutely nowhere else in the world.

A “Sweet” Newly ‘Canmissioned’ Instrument

The CanJoe Company of Blountville, TN has the experience and the expertise of designing and hand crafting perfectly functional and very beautiful musical works of art in every ‘canceivable’ way by using any size, shape, or ‘canfiguration’ of can made by mankind. The photos of the one-stringed musical instrument shown above depict the most recent ‘canmissioned’ CanJoe Company musical instrument made. It was presented as a special gift to an executive of the Christie Cookie Company of Nashville, TN and was ordered by one of that person’s special friends. Due the fact of having now more than 20 years experience in the business of designing, creating, and hand crafting these unique stringed musical instruments, the CanJoe Company can, has, and does build many variations of these cool instruments using all types of cans.

When anyone contacts the CanJoe Company about commissioning an instrument, several questions are asked by me about specific details concerning the personality, the type of character, the age, the gender, or other considerations associated with that new potential owner of the instrument. This information allows the direction and decisions needed to create just the right instrument suited to perfectly fit that person receiving it in every way possible, making their instrument ‘canpletely’ personal to them, for them, and of them only. This is the only way that anyone now receives or acquires a CanJoe Company product (unless the receiver is a sick child in a hospital and is met on the “Tour of Smiles”). Instruments created by the CanJoe Company are NOT legitimately being sold at flea markets, craft fairs, public events, or by anyone anywhere unless that person selling them is legally and publicly identified as ‘CanJoe*John’, (me), or is the CanJoe Company’s only officially authorized associate, Jack Bradshaw. In the early history of the canjoe instrument’s development days, back when Hershel Brown was still living, Herschel and I often worked together in collaboration to produce and improve on these items, so, now, in similar fashion, Jack has become a valuable part of the canjoe instrument history, too, by contributing to the ongoing and ‘cantinuing’ production of these really cool musical creations. So, if you are one whose reading this blog post and also want your own custom designed and hand crafted authentic, genuine, original CanJoe Company instrument, please give us a call at 423-323-0174.

40th Anniversary “Olde Frothingslosh” Electric Canjo

Click on photos to view enlarged.

Some ask, “Why does the CanJoe Company only offer and build custom orders?”. There are many reasons… The CanJoe Company of Blountville, TN officially first introduced these items to the market place and has been in continuous business and licensed since 1994. Establishing the cool one-stringed canjo musical instruments into a never before seen or heard by the world market was a very “hard row to hoe” endeavor; an extremely difficult and expensive one man effort. Though Hershel R. Brown was also simultaneously marketing his own mostly kit form design instruments by selling them through a wood working supply catalog, the CanJoe Company, (me), instead, often personally and physically met nearly every single buyer and sold each and every hand made and completed instrument as a face-to-face sale. There were also many who ordered their instruments by phone but, again, each of them were sold as result of person-to-person conversations while creating the orders. From the early years of the CanJoe Company, it was quickly discovered that nearly everyone wanted their own instruments to be completely unique to them. They often wanted specific woods or special cans, so, most orders completed and sold have been “custom” made all along. Many, over the years, who have acquired the original, authentic CanJoe Company instruments also have become very die hard loyal customers. There are a few who have purchased many instruments for their own personal collections with one individual now having fourteen (14) custom designed and hand crafted CanJoe Company instruments that he personally ordered and that he keeps as displayed in his own personal game room. Another die hard CanJoe Company instrument collector who loves his five (5) custom built instruments has also been directly responsible for the sales of over twenty five (25) other instruments (all custom designed) to his friends and relatives through referrals. The “Olde Frothingslosh 40th Anniversary” can now made into this custom electric instrument and fabricated from the fine, exotic spalted maple shown in the photo gallery above, was the most recent order placed as a birthday gift going to a man who had received his first acoustic CanJoe Company canjo instrument several years ago as a Christmas gift. These CanJoe Company instruments are NOT even remotely comparable to any of the wannabe items now being sold elsewhere to the public. For anyone interested in purchasing one of these genuine, original CanJoe Company instruments, a phone call or a personal visit to my shop is required…. The phone number to call is 423-323-0174.
