Fact: The Truth of the Canjoe Instrument History

The story posted below is a direct copy taken from the published issue of “Our State” magazine; the official magazine of the state of North Carolina. The direct link to this article is highlighted in blue and can be reached by clicking the hyperlink in the copyright statement included at the bottom of this article post. The story is about Herschel R. Brown, the genuine creator of the first and original one-stringed CANJOE musical instrument. This article validates the absolute factually documented truth; the veritable and accurate history of the origin of the one-stringed instrument, the “canjoe”, of which the instrument is also now reaching the popularity level that Herschel once dreamed of and that he even expressed about in his interview below:

Music for All: The Can Joe Man

By Carole Moore

Herschel Brown constructs buildings and delivers quality — and now he also builds one-string instruments and delivers happiness.

Editor’s Note: This story of Herschel Brown was one Our State‘s most popular stories. We, along with many other North Carolinians, were saddened to learn of his death on September 20, 2008. He was 87 years old. We feel privileged to have shared his story with our readers in 2004.

•••

Herschel Brown’s fingers, roughened by decades spent working with wood, press firmly on the narrow fingerboard lined with frets. Brown’s other hand picks a melody on the lone, steel string.

“Hang down your head, Tom Dooley,
hang down your head and cry …”

The mournful tune resonates throughout the cavernous workshop. Brown, a Jacksonville building contractor, grins as he reproduces the famous lament on an instrument so simple he says everyone can play it — and insists they should.

“Everybody ought to have a little music in their lives,” Brown says between songs. He pats the humble-looking instrument — a long, narrow, wooden fingerboard with 10 frets, an empty soft drink can attached to one end and a tuner key on the other — then launches into the opening bars of “Amazing Grace.”

The notes twang as they fade, absorbed by the sawdust and scraps of wood piled on the floor of Brown’s workshop. Stacks of fingerboards awaiting frets stand in a corner. When Brown’s finished with them, they’ll be integral parts of the instrument he’s playing. He calls it the “canjoe.”

Brown first spied the forerunner of the canjoe while on a trip to the North Carolina mountains about 15 years ago. Called the “uni-can,” it consisted of a plastic fingerboard, a plywood stick, and a dog food can. Brown recognized that the frets were comparable to those of mountain dulcimers. After studying the uni-can, Brown concluded he could do it better. He returned home and worked on the design until he came up with an inexpensive but sturdier version.

Brown loved the little instrument, played much like a one-string guitar, and decided to share it with the rest of the world. He contacted a catalog company and now sells canjoes through the mail. Brown prices it so low he makes no real profit, but the cost covers his expenses. And, in a move that would baffle most entrepreneurs, he also declines to patent his design.

“You can’t patent happiness,” Brown offers, openly inviting people to replicate the canjoe or craft their own version. Why? Because Brown says making music brings joy into the world, and there’s no easier way to make music than with a canjoe.

“It’s rewarding to see people, especially older people who’ve never been able to play music, pick up a canjoe and play a tune,” he says.

Crafted by hand

CANJOE Man Music didn’t play much of a role in Brown’s early years. Born in Seagate, about four miles from Wrightsville Beach in New Hanover County, he instead learned the craft of woodworking at his father’s knee. Times were tough, and every free hand was needed.

“I helped my father when I was 12 years old. He had a blacksmith shop, rebuilt truck bodies, did mill work, and constructed a few homes — any kind of work he could do during the Depression,” Brown says.

A husky boy, the younger Brown was in demand among local businessmen in need of a strong back. He soon found himself milking cows twice a day for $1.50 a week. He wasn’t too taken with the dairy business and instead returned to what he loved best — turning wood into something useful or beautiful. He remembers studying carpentry in school with fellow classmates.

“(The late newsman) David Brinkley was in my woodworking class in school, and he turned out to be a good woodworker, or so he told me,” he says. Brown graduated from high school in 1938.

He eventually went into building contracting and construction, working with his brothers. When his brothers moved to Onslow County to take advantage of the building boom created by Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base, they turned to Brown for help in erecting a commercial building. Sensing a good market for his talents, he packed up and moved to Jacksonville in January 1952. He and his wife Marguerie have been there ever since.

Their children — Raeford, the news director at WECT-TV in Wilmington, and Suzette, married to a Marine officer and living in Virginia — were raised in Onslow County. One of Brown’s three grandchildren lives next door to him in a house he built for her.
Delivering quality

Over the years, Brown dabbled in politics, with successful runs for the Onslow County Board of Commissioners and county school board. But that’s all in the past. Today Brown concentrates on running his construction company from his home office. After 52 years in the business, he has yet to show any signs of slowing down and still puts in a good day’s work. Brown prefers the quality and pride of old-fashioned craftsmanship but isn’t mired in yesterday. A computer graces his desktop, although he steadfastly refuses to obtain an email address. And the office itself is modern, though simple.

Old family photos dot the wall, and in the corner, plans for Brown’s latest construction project sit on a drafting board. Noted for his extraordinarily high standards, Brown accepts only one commission at a time. He doesn’t work for the money. Financially comfortable and with an excellent reputation for quality, Brown doesn’t have to continue putting up buildings.

“I do it for one reason — it’s nice to be needed. Also, it’s nice to feel at my age that I can compete with any of them,” says Brown, who is in his 80s.

He’s critical of the construction industry. Brown believes too many are in the business only for the money and neglect to devote enough time to the hands-on experiences that develop skill in the basics, such as cutting wood, driving nails, framing a building, and pouring the concrete.

“I try to give customers an honest building and pride myself on delivering to the customer everything I committed to deliver, plus a little extra,” Brown says.
Love of mountain music

Brown and his wife spend much of their free time traveling in their large motor home. It was on one of those trips that he began to nurture a love for mountain music. He fancied a beautiful mountain dulcimer he’d found during one of his travels. But, since he couldn’t play, he decided not to buy it. At Christmas, Marguerie presented it to him, forcing Brown to learn to play. Eventually, his penchant for wanting to know how things work led him to start crafting his own mountain dulcimers.

After a year of making dulcimers and scrapping them, Brown gave up and went to see Stanley Hicks. Hicks, a legendary musician and craftsman, lived near Boone and was considered an expert in the art of making — and playing — both dulcimers and fretless banjos. He produced world-renowned banjoes made entirely of wood, with heads constructed from groundhog hides.

Hicks showed Brown how he made his famous dulcimers using limited tools in a shop with a dirt floor. Brown and the legendary musician became friends and stayed in touch until Hicks’ death in 1989.

Brown continued his love affair with stringed instruments, crafting dulcimers in his workshop and polishing them until they shone. Meanwhile, his travels brought him in contact with the uni-can, and he began contemplating the possibility of playing an instrument with only one string.

Many cultures have developed single-stringed instruments. Vietnamese musicians play the don bau, controlling its sound by pinching the string with one hand and changing tautness with the other. The Pullivans of south India use a bow to play the veena, which also has a multi-stringed version. And, closer to home, African-American slaves once played diddly bow guitars, based on instruments of African origin and the probable forerunner of the slide guitar.

Brown liked the canjoe’s simplicity and the fact that it was easy to play. “I’m not musical. In fact, I’m the sorriest musician in the world. But I can play a can joe,” Brown says.

A canjoe in every home

Across the North Carolina state line, in Blountville, Tennessee, John VanArsdall echoes Brown’s enthusiasm for the canjoe. But then, what can one expect from someone who goes by the professional name of “CanJoe*John”? VanArsdall adopted Brown’s original design and built a more substantial instrument. He’s taken his canjoe act on the road and even released several CDs of his music.

Brown introduced him to the canjoe when VanArsdall and his wife Paula lived in Jacksonville. The Tennessee man says the canjoe can be used to play serious music with a light heart.

“It is not a toy, but a real instrument. I have played to cancer victims in hospitals, hospice houses, and private homes,” VanArsdall says. “I saw their pain-filled faces light up. What better medicine can any doctor give?”

VanArsdall used to play his canjoe for Paula, to comfort her during the final days of her illness. He says the music brought her peace and happiness. And for that, he thanks Brown. “Herschel Brown is one of the finest gentlemen alive. He is an octogenarian with the heart of a child, who wants to share with everyone the joy he knows is spread by the canjoe,” VanArsdall says.

And spread the joy is exactly what he has done. In fact, his canjoe was even used in one Washington, D.C., public school to start a music program. “It was the only type of instrument in the whole school,” Brown says. The program, started by the educator daughter of a canjoe enthusiast, eventually led kids to discover the joys of creating music. And Brown believes that nothing could be finer.

“What better way to forget your worries than to listen to good music?” he asks. But is canjoe music really good?

Brown flashes a smile, then absently rubs his shock of silver-white hair. “Some people laugh about it, but I don’t give a hoot. Everyone should be able to play some musical instrument and, other than a comb and paper, a canjoe’s the simplest thing I’ve ever heard of,” he says.

“I wish everybody in the country I sell these to would copy it and make them themselves,” Brown says.

Why? “Because everybody should have a canjoe,” Brown says.

And if he has his way, one day everybody will.

More Fun Than a Barrel of Monkeys

Gorilla

Going APE over a Canjoe!

The authentic, original CanJoe Company one-stringed thing, the CANJOE musical instrument is so fun to play that even a monkey can learn how! Each new instrument includes a detailed large print book of tablature (number notation) music that anyone can follow. The fret scale is a diatonic pattern of do, re, me, fa, so, la, te, do, and if one can hum or whistle a tune, it can be played on a canjoe. Not every one stringed instrument now being sold elsewhere and being referred to as a “canjo” is built with either the quality or the accuracy of the original CanJoe Company instruments. Every single note on a CanJoe Company instrument is dead on. Each instrument is custom hand crafted and the intonation on each fret is as near perfect pitch as can be possible. CanJoe Company instruments are not toys, not gag gift items, not sold by vendors at flea markets or at craft fairs, period! They are extreme high quality musical works of art and each are built by a musician who is so doggedly intent on accuracy, that none will ever be created as any instrument that does not meet the highest of quality and accuracy, period. No compromises are ‘cansidered’ or allowed! Now, for those who may be encountering similar instruments that are being offered for sale anywhere or elsewhere in the world, and if the person or persons selling those knock off instruments does not look just like the man, CanJoe*John, as shown below, then there is absolutely no way of assuring that any measure of accuracy or quality compares. Remember, too, that every CanJoe Company product is always fully warranted for life; except for a broken string, any CanJoe Company instrument will be restored, repaired, or replaced to equal value, forever! About Custom Designing

Stroh's/Sundrop

His & Hers

Many who call to inquire about ordering their own instruments have specific desires as to what cans will go on their instruments. The CanJoe Company specializes in providing only custom created musical works of art and ALL CanJoe Company instruments are individually hand crafted to suit the owners. Recently, a man from the “Tar Heel” state of NC called wanting to order one instrument for his wife, and one for himself. In the usual exchange of information required to determine the exact specifications and details for these builds, it was discovered that the wife required a “Stroh’s” can on hers, and because he grew up in western NC, he wanted his with a “SunDrop” can. Once the cans were determined, then the wood types that would best go with the cans were discussed and his choice for both was to use fine hard woods. As an artist and a ‘cannoisseur’ of fine woods, he left the choice up to me. In the design process, all things about the owners of each instrument are taken into ‘cansideration’. Oak is a manly type of wood so I chose a fine piece of #1 grade, blemish free, white oak to build his “SunDrop” canjoe instrument. The characteristics of the naturally light toned oak wood also blends nicely with the “SunDrop” colors. I made his a little heavier than hers as his hands would fit a little better on the slightly bigger piece. In designing the stain patterns and choosing the stain colors, it’s all from my personal artistic perspective, so I chose the matching colors of the can, green and red, to stain this particular finger board, and then over-stained the wood neck with golden oak wood stain to blend with the yellow colors in the can design.

For her instrument, she requested the “Stroh’s” can. Unbeknown to me, this brand of beer is not available in my neck of the woods. I called several chain food stores and even the large distributor of beer in the area and none had any available. Not giving in to defeat, I then went through my large inventory of rare and highly collectible beer cans from the 1960s era and found a vintage version in my collection. Ordinarily the vintage cans often cost more according to their collector’s value but this one is not particularly more valuable and I called the husband to verify its approval. He then told me that the real reason she chose the brand is that her father worked for the Stroh’s company back in the 60s so that it would work just fine. In choosing the wood for her’s, a fine piece of curly maple was decided. It being a very light color would be nicely suited to the can and the three colors, red, gold, and black that are the same colors as parts of the can logo were then chosen to decorate the fingerboard. Now that these two beautiful instruments are finished and shipped, it always gives me great pleasure to ‘canplete’ another order and to know that two more happy canjoe pickers will exist in this big, wide world!

Guit-Art Project

Though the CanJoe Company pioneered and specializes in creating the cool one-stringed musical instruments that it’s world famous for, occasionally other musical stringed instruments are created as functional hand crafted art, or in this special case, hand painted.

Tennessee’s oldest town, Jonesborough, TN, has a summer concert series each year called the “Music on the Square”. It is an open air event held on the Main street of the town with the scheduled music bands performing for the public from the steps of the historic county courthouse. This year as a fundraising event to benefit the “Music on the Square” the organization’s committee decided to offer a public auction of specially decorated guitars that select regional artists would alter. Forty guitars have now been artistically altered by these area artisans and I, CanJoe*John, was one as a selected artist for the “Guit-Art project. Now, I, as CanJoe*John, being a well respected artist who often collaborates, too, with other artists, on this particular project decided to collaborate with a 10 year old friend who is quite an accomplished artist, also. This young friend, Grason Smith, has been well known by me (CanJoe*John) since Grason was born. Grason is an artist prodigy, already having sold some of his drawings to local buyers, and he has also been mentored by me (CanJoe*John) since his birth, so the decision to showcase Grason’s talents was harnessed by getting him to hand paint the guitar. Grason chose acrylic paint as his medium to render the New York City scape, the buildings and the Statue of Liberty, and I (CanJoe*John) then added the surreal sky, touched up a little on the Ellis Island and painted the background and ocean to finish the work. Below are photos of the collaborated efforts of CanJoe*John and Grason Smith:

“Turkey-Jo”, electric 3 stringer

Turkey-Jo front

The Electric "Turkey-Jo"

The world’s only “Turkey-Jo” is an electric three-stringed musical instrument made nearly entirely from wood and created to be sold at auction to benefit the Kingsport, TN Bays Mt Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF). It is fabricated from five different woods; oak, cherry, curly maple, mahogany, and ebony. Conceived by, designed by, and master created by CanJoe*John, owner of the CanJoe Company, this fine arts product was a product collaboration of combined artists talents. With direct and ardent collaborated efforts and combined skills, CanJoe Company associate Jack Bradshaw and CanJoe*John then worked together for about 40 hours time over a couple of weeks to finish the creation. When it was completed, strung up, tuned and strummed for the first time ever, the sweet melodious notes that poured forth from this beautiful instrument sounded plumb heavenly! It was sold on auction to the highest bidder at the organization’s annual banquet for the a total of $700. In the year 1997 while attending a massive Fourth of July festival event at the Patriot Park in Pigeon Forge, TN, I was there and set up as one of over 400 craft vendors to sell and display my cool canjoe musical creations. I was also scheduled to perform as the opening for the music show that was to be a part of that day’s celebration event. As nature and providence often dictate as cause for change in plans, though, that day had some real surprises. The super country music band, “Shenandoah”, was the main headliner for the event and as their crew were setting up the main stage for their performance, I was manning my booth out in the field. The crowds of people attending were in the tens of thousands and no one there having yet ever before seen or even heard of the canjoe instruments, were enthusiastically coming by in droves to hear me do my pitch and listen to me play my own one-stringed musical thing. The sales of my instruments were brisk and though my little tent was very modest in comparison to the “big boy” vendors all around, there seemed much bigger groups gathered around me than of the others selling their goods. As the clear, bright, sunny morning progressed, a few clouds began to appear in the East Tennessee mountain sky and though the weather was supposed to remain good, a few scattered thunderstorms were in the area. Nearing the eleven o’clock morning hour, a tall and widely smiling man approached me from my right and quickly walked up to me at my booth. Before I could say anything, he enthusiastically inquired, “hey, can I draw you?”. I looked at him with a little puzzlement and said, “right now?”. He then quickly replied, “no, I’ll just remember what you look like and draw you later”. I, of course, agreed and he and I talked a little more and then exchanged business cards. Turned out that this man, Tim Elsaesser, was and is a professional artist and a cartoonist who lived in Gatlinburg and is now the present owner of a graphic art business called, “Spur of the Moment Concepts”, with his web site found at magicofthesmokies.com. He is also known as the “cartoonist of the stars” and has drawn caricatures of many famous individuals in his experience. After our first meeting, Tim did draw me and he sent the really cool caricature that he drew to me in the mail. That cartoon drawing that he sent was so bad-to-the-bone cool, I instantly adopted it as the official logo of the CanJoe Company, and it has since been a trademark image of my business and used on all of the company correspondence as well as all printed promotional and publicity items, for all these years. It is seen prominently at the head of every page on my web site, is on the cover on all the music tab booklets that go with the instruments, and is even printed on the special limited edition personal cans that were made by the Print On Can, Inc., for me.
Now, that happenstance encounter with Tim Elsaesser was a really fortunate meeting but what soon occurred later that day in the park was just as memorable. A couple of hours before the show was to begin, the official City of Pigeon Forge event promoter and family friend, Bob Easton, drove hastily through the vendor area telling everyone to take cover. He warned that the weather bureau had just sent notice that a powerful straight line wind was imminently heading directly toward the event and though it would be brief, it could cause severe damage and/or personal injury. Sure enough, within a brief few minutes an extremely powerful wind along with hail and pounding rain hit the area like a tornado. Tents, merchandise, and debris were flying around like Dorothy’s house in the “Wizard of Oz”! There was bedlam and panic all around as I quickly laid my own body over the table filled with my instruments under my tent and a female friend who was helping me that day, courageously grabbed hold of one of the tent poles and held it down with her own dear life effort. After the storm then quickly passed through, as fast as it appeared, it was gone. An eerie quiet prevailed in the air and upon looking around, there was not one vendor tent left standing, except mine! Out of the over 400 tents that had just a few minutes before been covering and occupying the huge parade field, they were suddenly ALL gone; strewed around with poles sticking up and scattered everywhere. Then, while looking toward the place where the main stage had stood, it was now collapsed. The main stage roof had caved in and all of the group Shenandoah’s equipment was destroyed. The event was obviously abruptly over! Nothing left to do but to help others gather their stuff and for us all to pack up and go home. Luckily, there were only a few minor injuries and one reported heart attack but the place was a total wreck and the day was finished. Well, what a mixed bag of experiences that day yielded. I didn’t get to perform, didn’t get to sell all my goods, but DID meet a lot of cool folks and DID get the coolest drawing I’ve used now for the past 15 years as my own, personal company logo. Tim became a real friend and a staunch supporter of the CanJoe Company and I now have some vivid memories and a wild but true story to tell… and if you’re reading this, I’ve just now shared it with you! ~ CanJoe*John (10/26/12)
