Guit-Art Project

Though the CanJoe Company pioneered and specializes in creating the cool one-stringed musical instruments that it’s world famous for, occasionally other musical stringed instruments are created as functional hand crafted art, or in this special case, hand painted.

Tennessee’s oldest town, Jonesborough, TN, has a summer concert series each year called the “Music on the Square”. It is an open air event held on the Main street of the town with the scheduled music bands performing for the public from the steps of the historic county courthouse. This year as a fundraising event to benefit the “Music on the Square” the organization’s committee decided to offer a public auction of specially decorated guitars that select regional artists would alter. Forty guitars have now been artistically altered by these area artisans and I, CanJoe*John, was one as a selected artist for the “Guit-Art project. Now, I, as CanJoe*John, being a well respected artist who often collaborates, too, with other artists, on this particular project decided to collaborate with a 10 year old friend who is quite an accomplished artist, also. This young friend, Grason Smith, has been well known by me (CanJoe*John) since Grason was born. Grason is an artist prodigy, already having sold some of his drawings to local buyers, and he has also been mentored by me (CanJoe*John) since his birth, so the decision to showcase Grason’s talents was harnessed by getting him to hand paint the guitar. Grason chose acrylic paint as his medium to render the New York City scape, the buildings and the Statue of Liberty, and I (CanJoe*John) then added the surreal sky, touched up a little on the Ellis Island and painted the background and ocean to finish the work. Below are photos of the collaborated efforts of CanJoe*John and Grason Smith:

About CanJoe*John

CanJoe*John began making and marketing the authentic 'canjoe' instruments from their origin. Introduced to them by their creator, Herschel R. Brown, in the early 1990s, John, from the beginning, helped Herschel manufacture them in Herschel's shop. John relocated back to his home state of TN in 1993 and continued, initially with Herschel's direct assistance, to make and market them, establishing the licensed sole proprietorship, the CanJoe Company, in 1994. As a professional musician CanJoe*John became billed as the "world's most unique musician, playing the world's most unique musical instrument, the canjoe" (aka, canjo). Always with his own personal canjoe instrument in hand he was awarded the adult "2007 Male Bluegrass Instrumentalist of the Year" by the North American Country Music Association International (NACMAI), and now having the distinction of being the first and only canjoe picker to ever perform on the Grand Ole Opry, has literally taken the one-stringed thing to the outer limits! CanJoe*John is a master craftsman and artist who designs, creates and crafts these instruments as custom works of musical fine art for those who respect and require the best of the best, truly genuine, original one-stringed musical instruments. He can be reached via email at canjoe@canjoe.com, or by phone at 423-612-4320.
